2017 Goals: This is My Year

Welcome to Life as Mrs Yolo version 2017!

First of all, I have to apologize for my abrupt disappearance; 2016 got a little bit hectic and I wasn’t in the right headspace to continue blogging. I will say though, that I did miss it so much. I missed having that idea for a post and then sitting down and having the words flow out onto the page. I missed the excitement and anticipation of waiting to upload a post and then seeing it go live. Most of all, I missed that creative side of me that I abandoned for a while. As I’ve been redesigning my blog (I hope you like it! Let me know in the comments!!), updating my knowledge, researching different things and getting myself excited again, I have definitely felt that creative spark reignite; and I’m excited to share this year with you!

As every New Year goes by, you find yourself reflecting and looking back on the past year and looking forward to the coming year. Over the past few days, I have made more of an effort to really nut out what my goals are for this year. I’m usually terrible at setting goals because I get lazy and then totally forget about them; however this year I really want to get in control of my life and make a life I’m excited to live.

In order for me to really take myself seriously (I know that must sound so strange! But really, we all have our moments), I have to make my goals seem fun and presentable to myself. This year, I used my obsession of journals to get started. Now I don’t know about you, but there’s nothing more satisfying than having a super cool journal, that’s brand new, with blank pages just waiting to be written on. I have too many journals and not enough ideas. So, in saying that, (after buying a few more journals.. Kmart, I tell you, is any hoarders dream!) I got started on writing my goals.

In order to be creative, I needed a little inspiration.. Hello Pinterest! After pinning like crazy, I got started.

Here’s what I did.

I established what areas of my life I wanted to set goals in; I figured if I knew what I wanted to improve or gain and in what area, I would be more willing to achieve it. I chose to focus on personal, spiritual, financial, professional and hobbies.

Now I read somewhere that in order for the percentage of you achieving your goals to increase, you need to write it down. To increase that percentage further, tell someone. So, you are all my someone. If I let you all in on my goals for the year, I absolutely HAVE to work to achieve them because I’ll be accountable to each and every one of you who reads this post; and I want to be able to tell you all that I was able to do it, thanks to you! So, will you accept the challenge? Let me know in the comments below!

My personal goals this year are, in my eyes, simple, yet important. To start, I want to step out of my comfort zone (which I think I’m doing quite well in achieving because I’m blogging!!) I chose this because I really want to do things that are going to help me to develop, and in order to grow and learn you have to do things you would never have otherwise done right?

Next I want to learn a new skill. So far learning all the ins and outs of blogging has definitely helped me gain a new skill, but I also want to start learning calligraphy; I even went so far as to get a starter kit.. So I’m halfway there! I feel like learning a new skill not only enables you to grow your talents, but also helps you to feel good about yourself when you finally master that skill you have been practising for so long!

I want to learn to relax. Now I don’t know about you, but I am such a terrible stressor. Any little thing gets me wound up. And that doesn’t exactly help my anxiety either! However, instead of relying on medication the rest of my life, I really want to get a grip on it and learn that if I can’t control the situation, at least learn to control the emotion. Of course it’s a big help having my hubby support me in that and reminding me to be in control so I’m feeling pretty positive about this one!

I guess that leads right into my next one; focus! I am terrible at staying focused on any one thing for too long. I get distracted so easily! I’ve always been that way as far as I can remember. In order for me to stay focused, I have to be genuinely interested in what’s going on. I guess this kind of explains my lack of achievement in the goals area. However this year I want to change that. I want to be consciously involved in staying focused. I think I’ve got a good game plan for that; I just have to make everything engaging and interesting for myself! So far, so good!

I want to find my passion. While I love a lot of different things and am interested in them, I am still unsure what I’m passionate about. This year I guess will involve a lot of self-discovery. I do know that I love to write. I love to help people and I love to inspire and motivate. So maybe that’s something to look into. Hopefully I’m on the right path with my blog; if I can achieve those goals, then I’ve found my passion.

Lastly, I want to feel and believe I’m beautiful. Whether this is an ongoing thing for us women, and even men, there’s always that constant feeling of maybe not being enough or maybe not measuring up to someone else. If you have mastered that technique, I would love to hear about it! However for me, I want to work on that. I want to do things that make me feel beautiful, that make me feel good inside. I’m not sure yet how I’m going to do that, but I know as I stay focused, I will get there.. Any ideas?

The biggest thing for me is SAVE. We live in a time where housing is crazy expensive, prices are continually rising and unfortunately the unemployment rate is high. I am blessed enough to have a full time job, as is my husband, so I definitely count our blessings at a time of great difficulty. While we are lucky to be living in a flat owned by my parents, we do want to eventually get our own house and the only way to do so is to save. While I feel as though I am pretty good in that area, there is always room for improvement and learning to effectively budget would be a great start. If you have any ideas, suggestions or blogs you’d recommend, I’m all ears!

I want to deepen my knowledge and testimony for the gospel. I want to attend the temple more and get everything I can out of church lessons. Developing that deeper love and appreciation is something I’m definitely striving for.

Something I feel strongly about. This year I really want to find a profession I love. I want to be able to have the financial freedom to not worry how we are going to make it this week. My biggest goal is to create my own business and I hope to take the steps this year to put that into action. I want to continue blogging and building on that. I want to create a life that I can control and one that I love to live. Once again, I am open to suggestions on how to get this going! If you have been successful and have found something you love, let me know about it!

Now this was an interesting one, and I understand you may be scratching your head too. But I felt it important to add because everyone needs hobbies. Everyone needs something that they love to do. I want to develop that and really make an effort to make time for my hobbies. I love rock climbing so I want to get back into that. I want to write a book and play sports again. And as the year goes on, I want to see what else there is to do. There’s so many opportunities to find something to love, and I want to take every opportunity to find them. What do you enjoy doing? Any suggestions?

So there you have it. I am now accountable to you for my goals.

2016 was a good year, however it was filled with a lot of have to’s and don’t want to’s. This year I want 2017 to be my year! I want to take control and enjoy life. We have every opportunity to do so, but it’s up to us to make that choice!

What are your goals for this year? Let me know in the comments below!

  1. Love the design of the blog! A great list. I’m currently trying to discover my own hobbies. I love reading and writing, but also looking at more creative things like making jewellery and scrapbooking. I go through stages of good saving. I usually find having a saving account works and only keeping the bare minimum in current account that covers bills and then like 50-100 a week to spend for luxuries. Hope that may help! x

    1. Thanks so much!
I always think of hobbies as such a neutral area so I really wanted to make an effort this year.. I love your ideas! Let me know how you go yea? 😊
You’re like me! I’m working on going from stages to consistency! Thanks for those suggestions, I’ll give it a go and then follow up in a future blog post with how I went! X

  2. I know exactly what you’re talking about when you say talk about the feeling of having a brand new super cool journal! I’ve been loving my erin condren planner and have been using that for my blog 🙂
